JazzVox Concerts in 2009!

July - Artist #1 - Inga Swearingen - Auburn locaton only
with Jeff Miley (guitar)
Dylan Johnson (bass)
Britta Swearingen (vocals)

Inga has a gorgeous voice, very fresh and evocative and note-perfect, and that's the sort of person you want to sing harmony to...”
- Garrison Keillor, A Prairie Home Companion

“She has the knack for making even complicated musical trajectories sound natural and flowing.”
- Josef Woodard, jazz critic

“Swearingen applied compositional insights to soaring vocals, with her original "April" -- a duet with Grace -- a compelling blend of lyrical melody and dark harmonies. She spontaneously led an irresistibly swinging duet with Korb on "All of Me," rendered "Stompin' at the Savoy" with fast-paced flexibility and illuminated the standard "Skylark" with a bass line from Chick Corea's "Children's Song."
- Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times

“Inga Swearingen’s voice is so true, her style and the joy that she exudes in her delivery, captured the entire audience.”
- Natalie Wilson & Lin Cook, Santa Barbara Jazz Society

July - Artist #2 - Cindy Scott - Camano location only
with Randy Porter (piano)

“Vocalist Cindy Scott strikes gold her first time out. Scott is a musical artist who delivers fables and stories and vignettes of life and love. But the young lady can also swing you into bad health. Highly recommended.”
– Roger Crane, AllAboutJazz.com

“She has the uncanny ability to mesmerize listeners with titillating displays of vocal timing and captivating nuances. Cindy utilizes her skills in a manner that clearly allows for total immersion in her music."
– Sheldon T. Nunn, JazzReview.com

"...Randy Porter, an exceptional pianist whose grace and grit should win him many new friends. Listen!"
– Dr Chuck Berg

“Beautiful pitch, great time (which I believe is almost everything) -very good!!! Hard to believe you've not been 'at it' for very long, you also sound so natural, great voice!”
– Karrin Allyson, Concord Jazz recording artist and two-time grammy nominee.

August - Cathy Segal-Garcia
with John Stowell (guitar)

I needed to have a guitarist this month (so I can use the clubhouse if weather turns HOT since
the condo doesn't have A/C. Long a fan of John Stowell's fanastic playing, I suggested to
Cathy we pair her with John - little did I know they've gigged many times together!
Come enjoy! Here's some great press about each:

Cathy:

"In Control: Jazz singer Cathy Segal-Garcia's style leans toward heavily melodic vehicles that show off her flowing, at-ease, rhythmic sense...A voice that's soft and warm as cashmere."
– Zan Stewart, Los Angeles Times

"If you closed your eyes you might think she was a highly evolved horn player..."
– Larry Koonse

"A model of warm, exquisitely focused jazz vocalizing...sensuous voice and cool harmonies."
– Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times

John:
“John Stowell plays jazz, but he doesn’t use any of the clichés; he has an incredible originality. John is a master creator.”
– Larry Coryell

“More guitarists would play like John Stowell if they knew how.”
– Herb Ellis

“Guitarist John Stowell’s style with standards is a delightful departure from the road well traveled. He transcends the label of jazz guitarist.”
– Los Angeles Times

October - Hanna Richardson (vocal/guitar)
and Patti Wicks (piano/vocal)

Hanna:

“Richardson has a light, clear, pure voice and flawless diction reminiscent of Blossom Dearie...the listener's heart cannot help being filled with joy...”
– John Herr, Cadence Magazine

“...has a way with phrasing that keeps one's attention and sings so one understands the lyrics...and all with an extremely pleasant voice... Recommended"
– Dave Nathan, AllAboutJazz.com

"She has a natural, easy sense of swing, articulates lyrics clearly and with feeling, and knows how to pick good songs...She could become the East Coast's answer to Rebecca Kilgore."
– Joe Lang, Jersey Jazz

And back with us again...
Patti:

"conversational approach to jazz  vocals, a kind of Shirley Horn and Anita O'Day rolled into one."
- Michael Bailey, AllAboutJazz.com

“….Patti is my kind of singer: no nonsense delivery, excellent song choices, playing beautifully for herself, and I detect a very attractive Pinky Winters/Jeri Southern vocal quality I find most appealing.”
- Carol Sloane

November - Kenny Washington
with Bill Anschell (piano)

Kenny:

“Washington scats with the harmonic daring and rhythmic command of a bebop saxophonist and interprets standards with intelligence and emotional commitment...”
– Andrew Gilbert

"... In Culver City at the internationally renown Jazz Bakery, a non-profit haven for “A” list jazz musicians and jazz enthusiasts that appreciate a top-notch listening venue, is where jazz vocalist virtuoso Kenny Washington performed to a lively audience on Wednesday night. For those who have never heard his voice, he is a must-hear performance. From Ella Fitzgerald to Stevie Wonder, Washington has captured them all and then some adding his own unique dynamic to the mix. From his sultry, soul-filled tenor tones to a falsetto that challenges even Prince’s vocal range to his percolating scat that emerges as he transforms his entire being into the expansive sounds he creates, Washington has truly mastered his craft."
– Jennifer Fordyce, Social.com

Bill:

"....forthright lyrical beauty and spontaneous chance-taking that always hits the mark."
- Dan McClenaghan, AllAboutJazz.com

"He's an unsung hero of the understatement. A lavation, a magic, a mystery and totally original. He'll play the same song different ways, every time, even if it's his own."
- Dick Crockett, The Voice, 88.7, Sacramento
