Upcoming JazzVox Concerts:
JazzVox Concerts in 2008! September 20, 2008 - (Federal Way-ish Location) - 7:30pm
October 24, 2008 - (Camano Island Location only) - 8pm A Dynamic Duo! singer-pianist Patti Wicks w/ local treasure Greta Matassa ! While my focus for this series is to feature visiting vocalists, we have some amazing talent right here! To keep it a special and unique performance, I'm pairing the fantastic Greta Matassa with the brilliant MAXJAZZ pianist/vocalist Patti Wicks. Greta has been called by the press "stratospherically gifted" (Earshot Jazz) and "a marvel of virtuosity" (Los Angeles Times) - we couldn't agree more. She's magic! One of my favorite of Patti's many great reviews was in Cadence magazine: "Patti uses her low alto voice with its sand papery undertones to tell stories about love's fragility". If you're looking for sweet honey-toned vocals (often with no emotional connection), keep looking. If you're looking for the real deal... Patti's vocals cut to the core of the lyric, phrasing makes all too much sense and impressive skills on the keyboard will be a wonderful match for Greta. Those of you in/near Seattle/Bellevue/Issaquah who can't make this performance... please consider supporting these artists at Bake's Place the following night (October 26th). November 22, 2008 - (Federal Way-ish) - 7:30pm November 23, 2008 - (Camano Island) - 5pm A Dynamic Duo Part Deux! singer-guitarist Julie Kelly w/ local treasure Kelley Johnson ! w/ John Hansen, piano This is the second in our series of pairing a wonderful visiting vocalist with one of our local gems! The late, respected jazz critic Leonard Feather once said of jazz singer Julie Kelly, "Julie Kelly radiates a sense of joy and spontaneity. Listening to her, you are reminded that jazz singing is still alive and well!" Feather's successor at the Los Angeles Times, the veteran critic Don Heckman, referred to Kelly as having, "one of the finest vocal jazz instruments of the '90's". Winner of multiple awards (Earshot, Jazz Connect) and most recently a Jazz Ambassador for the State department, Kelley Johnson is truly a blessing to have right here in Seattle (somebody pinch me!). Cadence magazine said, "Her voice has warmth and a very attractive underlying sexiness. She is right on each note and phrases with a graceful swing..." while Seattle Weekly contributes, "With a strong, engaging voice that's winsome without being sweet, Johnson is the kind of singer you can lose yourself in for an evening."
